Understanding the types of prosthetic knees:

 

Microprocessor Hydraulic Knees

  • Use sensors and microprocessors to adjust swing and stance in real time.

  • Provide smoother, more natural walking and adaptive stability on different terrains.

  • Examples of these are: Avior, C-Leg4, Genium, and Rheo

Mechanical Knees

  • Use a fixed or hydraulic system without electronic sensors.

  • Rely on mechanical design (single-axis or polycentric) to control swing and stance.

  • Examples of these are: 3R85 Dynion, KX07, Mauch, and Prosedo

Powered Knees

  • Actively assist in knee flexion and extension using motors or energy-return systems.

  • Reduce effort during walking, stair climbing, and standing.

  • Examples of these are: Intuy and Power Knee

Safety Knee is designed for lower-activity users or those needing extra fall protection, often includes mechanical locks or controlled resistance to prevent unintended knee flexion.

Polycentric Knee uses a multi-bar linkage system to mimic natural knee motion, providing increased stability, smoother swing, and higher ground clearance during walking.
